Homesick Hawaiians
Check out this article about Hawaii students going away to college...this was exactly my experience in Alfred, NY from 1990-94:

I especially like this quote:
Tsai, a Honolulu native, said he has been asked questions such as: "How long have you been in the U.S.? Do you use U.S. dollars? Do you live in grass huts?"
Sadly, this is VERY true. I had a woman at a doctor's office in Pennsylvania ask me how I like living "in the United States"...wtf? Some students thought I needed a passport to to travel to the mainland. It was rough. Don't even get me started on all the pineapple jokes. Well, it's comforting to know there are Hawaii clubs for students:) I woulda never made it through college without Marnie, Jennifer, & VOLLEYBALL!
