Real Genius

Real Genius was on TV yesterday. Although I've seen it at least 4 or 5 times (back when HBO was one channel) it wasn't until yesterday that I appreciated ALL the dialogue that's in it. Besides the obvious tongue-in-cheek one-liners (and Val Kilmer hotness), there is some really respectful nerd speak going on (I am not a scientist or engineer, mind you). I was convinced that bromide was the best laser medium and that techies actually go ice skating in their dorms with a special "ice to gas" compound. Well, I guess most of the kudos lies with über smart script advisors but my nod goes to the great cast (Jordan, in my pocket you go!) I believed every one of them. And the nerd humor...hokey smokes...it was fantastic. As a T-shirt connoisseur, I was especially delighted to revisit Val's t-shirts...This movie came out in 1985 WAY before Urban Outfitters and other "hip" stores began monopolizing screened tees. Yikes, I just realized that this movie will be 20 years old next year. Eeek. Well, I guess the fashion flap covers itself every 20 years. In other news...

It's official. My office has now been IKEA'd.
The IKEA store in Phoenix opened earlier this month to a HUGE crowd of desert dwellers salivating for Swedish made-in-China home furnishings and neatly presented gravy-meatball entrees. Of course, we were not immune to the madness. Laney promptly scooped up 2 large cubbyhole-type bookcases which now sit grandly in my upstairs office. At first I was a bit intimidated by the thought of having to religiously dust these creatures but after seeing them standing majestically adding contrast to the bland beige surroundings, I blissfully forgot about custodial duties. I'm sure there will be additional trips to the big yellow and blue for other non-emergency aerodynamic accessories, but for now I am content with arranging my framed pictures in a nice game of "designer tic-tac-toe".

Good times.
